Taking Risk can = Temporary Failure

What do you do when you plan an activity and it is EPIC failure?  When you try new things in the classroom there is a HUGE risk that there will be lessons that fail, COUNT ON IT.  I created this amazing, YES AMAZING activity.  My student aide cut it up, my intern teacher helped but it in the Ziplocs, and I got the activity ready.  Somehow we mixed up the bags.  IT HAPPENS.  Always have a back-up plan!!  This is just part of teaching life.

After AGAIN sorting the bags I was ready for the activity.  The next day the activity went off without a hitch.  This is a matching the quadratic attributes to include:

                                                Standard Form

                                                Graph

                                                Roots

                                                Factor Form

                                                Vertex

                                                Axis of Symmetry

                                                And vertical shifts.

I loved the math talk and watching all of the pieces of a quadratic fall in place for the students.  Check out my TpT store for this activity.

Shhhh I love LISTS!

How do you stay organized?
This is always a struggle for me.  Here is my dirty little secret…….I AM A LIST MAKE….there I have admitted it.  I have tried multiple ways to keep my list where I can 1) use them 2) not lose them 3) NOT PUT TO MUCH ON IT.  For years I used a calendar but as my district has gone to outlook calendar that was to redundant for me.  I have tried multiple apps to do a to-do list but I have to admit I hate them.  I need the satisfaction of marking off or physically removing them.  The past year I have used a journal and this worked well except I always had more to do than I could get accomplished so I felt defeated.

After must (ok way too much) thought I figured out I could always get 6 things done a day.  That was doable without being overwhelming.  So I came up with this chart.  I love that I can remove the stickies when I am done.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE the colors (shhhh do not tell anyone I love creative cute things).  I did laminate it to hold up to daily use.

There is a copy of this for FREE in my TPT store.

Are you addicted to Task Cards yet?

Kill and Drill..... I was asked if I believed in kill and drill in math class.  My instant reaction was "No of course not"  I know that this is the evil in math classes.  But when I thought about it and I admit had sleepless nights pondering this.  I do not believe in mindless worksheets and do the same style problem over and over.  BUT  and this is a BIG BUT I do believe that working problems until you have the basics down is critical.  You can not have critical thinking problems unless students have the basics of that topic in math.

The question is how do you get students to complete multiple basic problems?  Enter TASK CARDS.  These can be used with any style questions but I have been using them when I want students to really practice basic problems.  The students love them because they get to choose their grade.  There are 40 cards and this is the grading system I use.

The students LOVE that they get to choose their grade.  I love that most of my students made the CHOICE do try for a 100.  That means they did 40 problems in less than 45 minutes.  Think about this what would happen if I had given them a 40 problem worksheet? These are the task cards for this day...

These are basic "naked math" questions but before we can do critical thinking they have to be able to do them.  Here is how I am using task cards...
  • Students work in pairs
  • They can choose the grade that they want.
  • Students complete the problem on white boards and then bring it to me to see if they are correct.  If they are correct GREAT they get the credit.  If there is a mistake the student has 2 choices.  1) go back and correct the question and if correct they still get credit.  OR  I will explain it but the card does not count.
  • I have done these multiple times and it is ALWAYS amazing.  The students speak math, fully engaged, and LOTS OF PRACTICE.
This is a WIN-WIN for me in the classroom.

Check out my TpT for a free set of these.  EducatorJennTPT

Action Research Project Draft---

This is the draft of my action research project.  This project will not be completed until this summer but I am on track for this.

Beginning August 2012, the 99 students who will be studied were identified and basic results from previous STARR test and the pretest on academic vocabulary.  These 99 students have a regular geometry class; seventy of them have an additional tutoring before school, after school, or during school.  This process will end for the students the day of the Geometry STAAR test.  The final outcomes of the project will be when the results of the STAAR test return.

The teacher will use research based strategies to introduce and reinforce academic vocabulary.  Students will play interactive computer games and paper to help build their skills.   The students will create interactive journal entries to reinforce the learning.    The child will have multiple modalities to practice and learn in his or her own way.

There is strong parental support for anything that will help students on the STARR test.  Our school had less than thirty-five percent of our students pass the STAAR test the first time.  The students had four weeks of summer support and most are assigned an additional tutoring time that starts at forty-five minutes before school or extends the school day by forty-five minutes.  With students failing multiple disciplines many of them have been assigned all support sessions.  Parents were provided with the initial selection of students and STAAR results will be released to them.  Parents were also provided with interactive websites to practice at home if the family had a computer.

We have a classroom set of I Pads.  This allows each group to have an individual device.  The use of the I Pads made implantation of the games easy for the students since most have owned and I-device before.  The use of I Pads made the creation of interactive games much more difficult for the teacher.  I Pads do not use flash and many interactive games require the use of flash.  The paper activates were a huge hit since it allowed for working in pairs.  This allowed the students to build a coach-coach relationship.  Many times the paper activities helped develop a deeper knowledge base.

The only resources used were the classroom set of I pads and paper activities.  No other funding or resources were required.

The study promoted a positive school culture of school improvement by allowing the students to play to learn.  Through the study, the children were having fun while gaining much needed vocabulary skills.  As the process continued the children began to develop self-confidence and their skill level and grades began to increase.  The students also became active members in the classroom setting.  The extra practice allowed students to become classroom leaders, for many this was a new role for them.

This component is still in the works. Since the project is still in progress there have not been any feedback surveys.

The results of the research have been shared with the Geometry team and the Caprock High School leadership team.  Information was shared in a written report and in the form of a PowerPoint presentation.  The feedback from the project has been varied.  The computer portion of the project has positive feedback.  The paper activities the feedback has had some negative feedback.  Some teachers felt that the creation of the activities was very time consuming.  If they were created for them the teachers liked them but they did not want to create their own.

Based on the results of my action research project, teachers could easily implement the process into their own classroom.  I have simply provided a list of educational websites and paper activities that have been pre-created for Geometry.  The only other requirement the teacher needs is to ensure he or she has the necessary technology and time set aside to allow the students to work.

Key words for my action research project are I Pads, Response to Intervention, comprehension, confidence, technology, vocabulary, hands on activities, and interactive applications.  Additional words will be added as the report is finalized.

Action Plan Draft

This is my action research draft plan.
1.  Title – Vocabulary in the Math Classroom  (5 points)
2.     Needs Assessment – Curriculum standards were designed to ensure every student gained the same education as his or her peers. However, these curricula did not account for the various types of learners each classroom possesses. Every student does not learn the same way nor do they come to us with the same vocabulary.  In mathematics the language of math is what causes many students to have difficulty.  Using research based strategies and a sampling of 90 students’ data will be collected to see if the use of mathematical vocabulary can be increased.  My increasing the mathematical vocabulary there should be a trend between the rise in knowledge and STAAR scores.
          3.  Objectives and Vision of the action research project. (ELCC 1.1) –Since every student does not respond to the same method of instruction, it is the teacher’s responsibility to find various avenues to reach each and every student. According to Tracey Hall, senior research scientist for the National Center on Accessing the General Curriculum, “To differentiate instruction is to recognize students varying background knowledge, readiness, language, preferences in learning, interests, and to react responsively” (Hall, 2002). Differentiated instruction is a method of changing teaching and learning for students with different abilities within the same classroom environment.  The use of research based vocubulary strategies falls into the category of differentiating instruction since every child comes to the class with a different level of knowledge.  "Technology also changes the way teachers teach, offering educators effective ways to reach different types of learners and assess student understanding through multiple means" (Edutopia, 2008). Utilizing technology in the vocubulary strategies also augments the relationship between teacher and student. If technology is used effectively, teachers take on the role of mentor rather than teacher. Also, using technology helps make the student's learning experience more meaningful and fun. This is critical with vocubulary.  Learning words outside of experience will not have true learning  experience.

4.  Review of the Literature and Action Research Strategy – "Technology also changes the way teachers teach, offering educators effective ways to reach different types of learners and assess student understanding through multiple means" (Edutopia, 2008).  According to the National Reading Panel Report, using technology to teach vocabulary and reading for content is a relatively new field.  The numbers of studies published in this field are very small; approximately 21 studies, but all have reported positive results (NEIRTEC, 2004). The limited research suggests that using computer technology to enhance reading instruction is worth further study. "In particular, the NRP notes seven studies found positive effects from the capability of computers to provide spoken versions of written text, which indicates that this may be a promising use of technology in reading instruction" (NEIRTEC, 2004).   This works with research based strategies to assist with vocabulary and reading for content.

5.  Articulate the Vision (ELCC 1.2) – A group of teachers addressed the need to raise our student’s vocabulary and reading for content in the mathematical classes.    I proposed to use research based strategies to include the benefits of utilizing technology since our students come from a tech savvy world.

6.   Manage the organization (ELCC 3.1) – As a part of the focus of study, I choose my four classes of regular level geometry classes.  Seventy –five percent of the classes are billegal and/or live in a Spanish speaking home. The goal was to work with these students for one hour five times a week for a nine month period using interactive vocabulary strategies to include games on the computers and IPods.  The study was to determine if promoting vocabulary will equate to higher STARR scores for the students.   Each student was provided with his or her own IPod or computer to work on during these sessions if technology was going to be used.  The teacher would set up the learning sites for the students to practice on during this time period.  The teacher would simply tell the students how to utilize the program and the hardware, but no information was given on how to complete the interactive games.  The games provided focused on building the students skills in text fluency, vocabulary, and spelling.  The teacher's primary role was to serve as a mentor on the use of the interactive games.  Since the technology was already available to the teachers, no money was necessary in conducting this study.  Some of the strategies are interactive but paper based.  At the end of the time period students will be given the opportunity to take a survey on which method they prefer.

7.  Manage Operations (ELCC 3.2) – The student's progress through this study was based on various criteria.  The primary method of determining the student's success was the use of teacher observation on the completition of the various strategies/activities.   Each unit, the student would be tested to determine his or her overall growth in text fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.  The second last method of assessment was the students overall achievement on weekly reading activities and assessments.  The final assessment area will be the scores on the Geometry STARR test.

8.  Respond to Community Interest and Needs (ELCC 4.2) – The action research project will serve the needs of the students with special and exceptional needs and students with diverse backgrounds (cultural, ethnic, economic, or special interest groups) is that it is helping the child build confidence in his or her vocubulary mathematical skills.  They are able to master each new vocubulary set of words and apply them to the mathamatical situations.  By building confidence, they are more willing to try in class and thus improving their grades and test scores on the STARR.  As the child's grades improve, they are less likely to be at risk of dropping out of school.  A lower drop-out rate means more people entering the community as productive citizens.

Trying to get into Blogging

Let me be totally honest I hate HATE HATE HATE to write.  I know that it is not my strong point and I am always self-conscious on writing.  But I do have ideas and files that I would like to share with my friends.  With that said I am going to try and be more diligent with my blog.

As I am getting ready to go back to school tomorrow I am doing last minute organization around the house and for school.  I was on Pintrest and found this great meal planner/shopping list.  Then when I clicked it was NOT PRINTABLE.  WHAT WHY NOT?  That did me no good but I was able to recreate it.  I think this will be helpful in the upcoming semester.  I have attached it both as a pdf and word if you would like to adjust it.

Teach Like a Champion

I am not sure about everyone else but I am ready for Christmas!  Shannon and I were fortunate enough to go to the Teach Like A Champion Conference.  To hear the effects of TLaC on schools was amazing.  Both of us came back energized to try some of the techniques.  I wanted to share a video of my class after day 3 of implementing Cold Call (Pg-112-125 TlaC) with an extended wait time.  The extended wait time has been very effective in the class.

The students did ask why we were changing questioning and I explained the theory behind it.  I was amazing to see their reaction that we (teachers) are learning to be better teachers.  With that said I am so NOT perfect at this.  I should have taped it from the front and instead of answering the one question having another student answer it.  Also, I am trying hard to remember to say “waiting on scholars” instead of numbers.  With that said my class participation has gone up tremendously.

Hope you enjoy.

The Good, The Bad, and the UGLY

This is an update on how I am doing on my action research plan for graduate school.  There is good, bad, and ugly on this update.  VERY UGLY

The Good-   I am committed to my students mastering the language of the math to be successful both on the STAAR and future courses.  I have implemented two strategies that have been widely successful in the classroom.  One is highlighting the words on the objective that I think are critical and the students must define.  The second was the creation of the word in translation slider that the students can use in the classroom.  It was also discovered that these can be used on the actual STAAR.

The bad- I am not near as far into my plan and I dreamed I would be.  The start of school with a new administration and being on stage one has been OVERWHELMING add school to this and I feel like a top spinning out of control.

The Ugly- There is really no end at sight.  If I do not accomplish my action plan the students will not be successful and that is no acceptable.  Time management has become critical and I MUST I think I can I think I can I think I can succeed.  The future of my kids is at stake.

So that is the good, the bad, and ugly.  Right now I really think that I need to take the advice of the little engine that could.  I think I can I think I can.

Where the kids get lost in Translation

One of the Algebra skills my students struggle with the most is take a problem from written form to an equation. Causes my hair to turn gray  I teach Geometry and this is always an issue.  With the new depth of rigor the ability to translate to an equation is even more critical.

I was searching on Pintrest and found this WONDERFUL study aid for my kids.  The problem is that it require ALOT of cutting.  I hate to cut. (That is not even strong enough wording)  I would rather do anything that cut.  So to my Cricut (scrapbooking tool)  after a little frustration I was able to cut 25 sleeves in less than 10 minutes.  This is my type of project.

The best thing is that I know have a study aid for my students!!  I have put the power into their hands to succeed.  What was once a scary skill is now just a "slide" sway!

Now my wheels are turning....what else could I use this for?

What will YOU change?

Pinned Image
It was the worst of times it was the best of time……Ok not really this week has been HARD…REALLY REALLY HARD.  For the first time I am at a campus that has been labeled “under performing” even though out kids showed individual growth.  Professional Development started with lots of data, drama (it is high school) and now today DREAMS.

I was working on my classroom griping because I had missed measured and was going to have to go buy more fabric.  I am a math teacher…really?  Then I got to thinking how this is so like my kids.  They make simple mistakes; our reaction is what will determine if this is a simple mistake or a huge one.  I have heard since the beginning of teaching to “teach like I parent”.  Let me tell you this does not work for me.  I am lucky I have a child who is responsible, over-achiever, and really easy.  I have tried teaching like I parent.  I am strict on some things, yell, take things away, sarcasm…this is NOT working for me or them.   As I read Teach Like a Campion I owe so many students an apology they deserved a better teacher.

What will I do different?  Positive framing, No Opt-Out and NO SCARASAM I am really trying.  Out new principal said something powerful "lead with mercy."  They are kids,  they make mistakes.  I really do not think any of them get up in the morning and think “Can I ruin her day.”  A gentle correction may work where being a hard nose has not.  If this keeps one child encouraged and in school then that is one I have not reached before.

The above quote in on my door, I selected it for the kids but now I see really I was led there for me.  This will be the first thing I see when I walk in my room and the last when I leave.

What changes will you make this year?
